Cheatoceros calictrans is an orange phytoplankton that blooms heavy and turns brown when mature. This is one of our favorite phytoplanktons for the color.
Cheatoceros calcitrans is one of two micro algaes that contain high fucoxanthin and gallic acid content with significant antioxidant activity.(Foo et al., 2017) science direct.com
The presence of long, thin outgrowths (spines), aiming to reduce the sinking rate of a cell, is a distinctive morphological feature of representatives of this genus. Cell sized vary over a wide range of 2–3 µm up to 50 µm and even more. Spines, connecting the frustules of the cell, promote the formation of colonies, which may comprise up to several hundred cells and may reach a length of several millimeters. Some Chaetoceros species are well-established commercial aquacultures. Many of them are recognized as generally good producers of useful lipids and other biologically active products with high value-added. They have enormous potential for producing nutraceuticals and biofuel. (National Center for Biotechnology Information)

After purchasing a beautiful Mandarin Dragonet, I was in search of a sustainable way of keeping him well-fed. Reaching out thru chat, I got a timely response from Skyler, who got me set up with a kit that has everything I needed to start culturing two different kinds of pods. When I received the order, my Tigriopus pods were mostly DOA. I informed Skyler right away, and he sent me replacements at no cost, which arrived, healthy, soon after. Skyler responds to my many questions via chat in a timely manner, and is always courteous and helpful. Just harvested my first batch of pods! Super cool! Great products and awesome customer service!
Very satisfied with the shipping and the quality of the elegance. Can’t wait to see and buy more from you guys. Thank you.
Tons and tons of pods that were happy, healthy, and great eaters! The rotifers took very well to my tank and my juvenile fish and corals love them!
As for the phytoplankton, it was perfect. Nice and dark, did it's job well, and keeps well in the fridge too!
Bottles were sturdy and clearly labeled.
Can't reccomend Reef Legends enough!
I’m on the 3rd generation from the Rhodomonas Salina culture from Reef Legends. I would not hesitate to buy again!
Very pleasant experience from the communication to the ordering, to the products in hand, five star service at its best. Additionally, some of the most generous bottles of pods I have ever seen, to say that they were stacked would be kind of an understatement. Definitely give them a shot and order today!!!!
